Cover: Is It Healing Justice?

"Healing Justice is a framework for embodied liberation. Coined by Cara Page and the Kindred Healing Justice Collective, it has become a North Star for liberation movements doing radical healing work. At BEAM, our concept of Healing Justice is constantly evolving-- and as we are growing in our understanding, we have developed a key set of questions that we always ask ourselves to help us get clear of our alignment with Healing Justice values. We share this tool to help in the hopes that it helps others assess their programs and initiatives, and move us all closer to a more loving, liberated and equitable world." - Yolo Akili

  • Slide 2 - Is it led by and affirming of Disabled, Queer, Trans, Immigrant Folks? Does it decentralize heterosexuality, and ideas of “normal”?
  • Slide 3 - Does it question models of healing approved by white supremacy while also taking what is useful?
  • Slide 4 - Does it reclaim indigenous and other healing practices as valid? Does it encourage folks to connect with their bodies?
  • Slide 5 - Does it hold systems accountable?
Does it hold the role of the individual while also holding the broader context of oppressive systems?
  • Slide 6 - Does it acknowledge that we are on stolen land? Does it affirm the legacy and brilliance of the first peoples who held the land?
  • Slide 7 - Does it embrace the ancestors and our lineage? Does it use shame to hold us to what others did before us or does it use knowledge to let us understand where we can build and grow from?
  • Slide 8 - Is it accessible? Can poor people, Disabled folks (mobility, cognitive, deaf) access and benefit from it? Does it assume a “normal” or does it embrace, emotional, physical, cognitive differences, and that mental illnesses are apart of the human experience?
  • Slide 9 - Does it divest from capitalism, the prison industrial complex and pathology? Does it invite folks to imagine systems beyond those sanctioned by the state?
