TIPS FOR SUPPORTING BLACK FOLX DURING PANIC ATTACKS
- If possible ask the person if they know what is happening.
- Pay attention to their symptoms (sweating, dizziness, rapid
breathing, etc.); panic attacks can look like heart attacks and other
respiratory distress. - Collect yourself and be mindful of how you might be activated by witnessing
someone else in distress. - Always ask for consent if possible before touching etc.
- Encourage them to breathe deeply in a calm even tone. Invite them to
breathe deeply into their bellies at least five times. Modeling and practicing
deep breathing with them can help. - If there are large groups of people around, have them back up and
give them space. - If possible, have them lean back against a wall while seated or standing, it can help them feel more grounded.
- Encourage them to sit tall as it will help with breathing.
- Stay with them until the attack resides and use comforting language to remind them that they are not alone.
WHEN SOMEONE APPEARS TO BE HAVING A PANIC ATTACK... NEVER
- Yell at them to calm down.
- Ignore their panic attack, judge or belittle them.
- Rush at them quickly or smother them.
