BMR Guiding Principles
Healing is our birthright and we have the capacity to heal...
Black Masculinity (Re)imagined is a community program created by Leroy Mitchell and Yolo Akili Robinson, that includes trainings and healing circles. These help Black men and masculine folks learn new strategies to connect, heal and care for themselves and each other while dismantling patriarchy and support collective Black mental health. These guiding principles inform the program and all of the work we do together.
- All Black men, masculine women and masculine folks are valuable and worthy of support, love and care.
- We acknowledge masculinity as a spectrum and honor all of its healthy expressions.
- Black men and masculine folks' mental health suffers because of how we are taught to suppress emotions and relate to women and femininity.
- All Black men and masculine folks have learned and can unlearn harmful behaviors.
- All Black men and masculine folks benefit from a system that degrades femininity and women. This does not mean that they do not experience oppression themselves.
- Supporting Black women's feminine folks' and the community's (cis and trans) mental health is the responsibility of all of us including Black men.
- All men and masculine folks regardless of sexual orientation, can and do perpetuate sexism and transphobia.
- Together, in community, behavior change is possible. We are responsible for behavior change and addressing violence.
